Patrice Jones aka "P-Bass" is an
internationally known bassist who has been playing
professionally for the past 25 years. Recently P-Bass has been
the music director for Aaron Carter and has worked closely
with Aaron's brother Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys.
He has toured with Grammy award winning Norman Brown, Tina
Marie, Pink, En Vogue, The Goo Goo Dolls, Outkast, Marc
Anthony, Celine Dion and Mary J. Blige. His
television appearances include Saturday Night Live, The
Rosie O'Donnell Show, David Latterman and The Tonight
Show. I recently had the opportunity to pick the brains of
a world renowned music man. Check out what he had to say. Moe:
When did you know you wanted to be a musician? P-Bass:
I would guess about age nine. It was back in the early
seventies and I had tickets to see Graham Central Station
featuring Larry Graham in Louisville Kentucky. Moe:
How did you get started in the biz? P-Bass:
I have been a professional musician since I was fourteen years
old. My dad got me my first gig at this lil hole in the wall
in the middle of the hood. That's where it all started for me. Moe:
What type of music do you like playing the most? P-Bass:
When it comes
to music I like anything that feels and sounds good. But if I
had to choose a favorite it would be gospel music followed by
the blues. Moe:
Who are your influences? P-Bass:
My influences
are Miles Davis, Stanley Clarke, Larry graham, Jimi Hendrix,
B. B. King, Muddy Waters, Bootsy Collins, Prince, Earth Wind
& Fire, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye to name a few. Moe:
What is your proudest moment professionally/personally? P-Bass:
My proudest
moment professionally was when I performed with En Vogue on
Saturday Night Live in the late 90's. My proudest moment
personally was performing with Norman Brown at the Hollywood
Bowl. That performance validated me as a top player on the
smooth jazz scene. Moe:
How have you managed to keep working over the years? P-Bass:
To be straight
up I've managed to keep working based on my reputation as a
good musician! Moe:
What can you tell our readers about your signature line of
guitars? P-Bass:
I'm very
optimistic about my signature line of basses. The P-Bass line
of basses from Infinity Music are quality instruments at
affordable prices. Moe:
What's on the horizon? P-Bass:
I'm currently participating in the Southern California Blues
Society Battle of The Bands. My blues trio won the first round
of competition and hope to win the whole thing. Moe:
Any words of advice? P-Bass:
My advice to
young musicians is to learn how to read music in both Clefs
(treble and bass). Learning to read music will open more doors
you professionally. |
