Kara Saun is a young and talented designer who just happens
to be an Angeleno and of African-American descent...She is
one of the remaining contestants on Bravo and Supermodel
Heidi Klum's "Project Runway".
On
Bravo’s “Project Runway”, designer Kara Saun won the
wedding dress competition and received accolades from famed
designer Michael Kors, renowned wedding dress designer
Amsale and Supermodel Heidi Klum to maintains her position
on the show. The
brainchild of Heidi Klum, “Project Runway”, has been a
huge success for designer wannabes and fashionistas alike.
Kara Saun was one of the few picks of thousands to be
a contestant on this show.
She went to New York from Los Angeles, where she now
resides, for an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Prior
to “Project Runway”, Fashion and Costume Designer Kara
Saun fused “funk” with couture, to create her innovative
fashion-forward designs.
Her attention to detail and use of novelty fabrics,
leathers and fun furs had become her trademark.
The
German-born designer was notably influenced by her military
upbringing and the many cultures she encountered and found
inspiration from her love of film, theater and music.
Greatly encouraged by classmates who voted her
“Best Dressed” and “Most Talented” in high school,
she received her first big order, when asked to design and
make her high school’s cheerleading uniforms.
Kara
Saun was designing for small boutiques and private clientele
in New York, when winning a National Design Competition and
a trip to Paris changed her path in design forever.
The once New York based designer and her label
relocated to Los Angeles to specialize in custom-made
designs for a celebrity clientele in music, film and TV.
The
growing list of entertainers who have worn the Kara Saun
label include: Eddie Murphy, Lil’ Kim, Queen Latifah,
Eddie Griffin, Snoop Dog, Lauryn Hill, Mario Van Peeples,
Mary J. Blige, Lisa Raye and Chaka Khan, just to name a few.
Additionally, Kara
Saun was Costume Designer for the funky Western, with a
Hip-hop flare, “Guns and Roses”, created a new look for
Queen Latifah, as Costume Designer for the Fox Talk Show,
and Costume Designed the outrageous HBO Comedy Special
“Voodoo Child”, starring Eddie Griffin.
She has also worked on various independent films,
music and fashion videos.
When
asked how it feels to be in New York again and crafting
designs on the spot, she replies: “It’s the most
exciting time of my life…Project Runway is a stellar show
that has given me and several other innovative designers the
chance to grow as a designer and tap into our innate ability
to create beautiful fashion.”
