Hip Hop Immortals

Thursday Feb.12, 2004 the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, CA was bursting at the seams with Hip-Hop alums, industry movers ‘n’ shakers, and various media outlets. They were gathered for the highly anticipated Los Angeles premiere of Hip Hop Immortals We Got Your Kids. Echoing Soundz, Inc. coordinated the star-studded event, which was sponsored by GQ, Hennessy, Image Entertainment, and Sock Bandit Productions in conjunction with the Jam Master Jay Foundation for Music.

The film, narrated by Bonz Malone one of its creators and writers, utilized an all-star cast of past and present rhyme slayers and industry veterans to tell the “real” story behind the music. Hip-Hop legends and cast members Rakim, Steve Rifkin, Kid Capri, MC Lyte, Busta Rhymes, Lil’ Kim, Fat Joe, Eve and Jermaine Dupri explore the evolution of the social, political and economic ramifications of Hip-Hop and how corporate has America bought into this phenomenon.

Each of these seasoned veterans has played a special part in not only the expansion of Hip Hop into a major form of music but also in making Hip Hop a way of life. They each use their unique experiences to help expose the corruption, kidnapping, and dictatorship tactics that corporate America has been using to suck the culture for all it’s worth. “It’s time we took this in the direction it should be going” says Rakim.

Hip Hop royalty MC Lyte, Special Ed, The Pharcyde, Mr. Cartoon, Kel, Yuck Mouth, C-Bo, MC Eiht, Groovy Lou, Benzino, and Mopreme Shakur and many others came out to show their love and support for the docu-film.  Stetasonic member and musical supervisor for the film, Daddy-O comments “It’s a beautiful thing to pay tribute to where the music comes from and to show the progression of music to this point”.  West Coast repper and Booyah tribe member Cobra also expressed his sentiments.  “It feels wonderful to be apart of something that’s voicing something from the gutter. Booyah tribe… we’ve been in the hood for days and to be apart of it is a moment of truth.”

This film is a product of intense love for the culture, and also features cultural architects of all kinds, from graffiti pioneer James TOP to fashion powerhouses like Karl Kani, FUBU, Enyce and Ecko Ultd.  We Got Your Kids looks to not only set the bar for future Hip-Hop films in terms of content, but also to challenge norms of how a film of this genre should look and feel. "This film is not about the music; it’s about the connections between Beats, Sneakers, Jewelry, Girls & Money," states Malone.

Hip Hop Immortals We Got Your Kids comes on the heels of Sock Bandit Production’s wildly successful coffee table book, Hip Hop Immortals. The first hardcover volume of the series was a runaway hit, creating worldwide demand for the recently released soft cover "The Remix".

Partial cast listing: Bonz Malone, Black Rob, Bone Crusher, Bone Thugs-N- Harmoney, Busta Rhymes, Busy Bee, Black Eyed Peas, Brett Ratner, Benny Boom, Big Boy, Cam'ron, Cypress Hill, Coolio, C-BO, Common, Chubb Rock, Daddy O, De La Soul, Digital Underground, Dilated Peoples, DJ Cash Money, DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Scratch, Dres, Enyce, Ernie Paniccioli, Estevan Oriol, Everlast, Erick Sermon, Eve, Eightball, Fabolous, Fat Joe, Fat Man Scoop, Flavor Flav, Fubu, Gang Starr, Game, Ginuwine, India, Jadakiss, Jermaine O’neal, James Top, Jam Master Jay, Joe Budden, Jermaine Dupri, Kool G Rap, Killer Mike, Kid Capri, L.A. After the premiere, everyone got their drink and eat on to the sounds of New York’s notorious DJ Goldfinger and even got a chance to display their tagging skills for a one-of-a kind piece of art that will be auctioned off and benefit the JMJ Foundation. Pretty intense stuff, and the audience loved it. Now that’s what’s up!
