"At
first glance [the play] appears to
be your standard-issue urban circuit
(or "chittlin"
circuit").... "Yoba seeks
to avoid Black male stereotypes....
Yoba is raising the bar of Urban
Theater.... He is one of a small,
but growing number of African
Americans who are filling in the gap
between August Wilson and Shelly
Garret by elevating the quality of
Urban Theatre."

Annette John-Hall of the Philadelphia
Inquirer 11/1/01
"Yoba
shows a nice ear for humor ... Yoba
has tapped into a need."

Yoba Biography |
In
1999, well-known playwright, Dave
Talbert asked me to be the lead in his
play, "His Woman His Wife."
He had been asking me for the previous
three years but I kept declining. I
had reservations about being in one of
those 'over- the- top traveling
chitlin' circuit gospel plays' that
come and go at the Beacon Theatre in
New York City. When he told me that
the role would require me to sing, I
decided to take him up on his offer.
At the time, "New York
Undercover" was in its fourth
season, my television rating was high
and is, we knew that my fans would
come to see what I was made of.
At the end of the run of the show,
which played in 12 cities across the
country, almost 250,000 people had
seen the play, it grossed $5,000,000
with a $3,000,000 profit! What I
learned from this experience was that
black folks all over the country loved
coming out to see plays by for and
about black folks, starring black
folks they love.... like me!
Looking
ahead to our own
history-in-the-making, The MYNT
Company is focused on bringing our
audiences theatrical productions that
encompass our world -- the stories,
the issues, the music, the dance, and
the next new art form that is
continually coming up on the horizon.
Our productions will feature the
performers you love and the emerging
talents who you will get to know and
love. Best of all, there will be
lots of opportunities for you and your
community to get involved with the
company's grass roots educational
programs, economic incentives and arts
based activities for our youth.
