VLAD |
The
recipe for DJ Vlad’s success
over the last couple of years has always been invention and strong
collaboration and he intends that 2004 should be no different.
March will see the release of the Rock Phenomenon mixtape,
which Vlad describes as “a mash-up tape of hip-hop and rock,”
the first of it’s kind in the mixtape world.
Following
on the heels of his very successful Rap Phenomenon mixtape
series ~ which won him such accolades as Vibe’s “Mixtape
Series of Year,” XXL’s “Bootleg of the Year,” 2003 Mixtape
of Year ~ Justo’s 8th Annual Mixtape Awards and
notable mentions in Rolling Stone, The New York Times and
AllHipHop.com ~ the tape will be available late next month at www.djvlad.com
and other reputable mixtape outlets.
Taking advantage of the wealth of musical talent that converged on
the city of Los Angeles to partake in the festivities, the tape
was recorded in Muggs’ Burbank,
CA studio during NBA All Star Week and features original
contributions from notables in both worlds ~ Zach de la
Rocha, Everlast, MOP and Cypress Hill to
name but a few.
DJ
Vlad began his mixtape career in San Francisco back in the mid
90’s where he revolutionized the game by using computers to
create his mixtapes ~ becoming the first DJ to release mixtapes in
MP3 format. By 2002 Vlad had totally taken over the West Coast
mixtape scene and his tapes would often be in higher demand than
major label releases. By this time Vlad had moved to New York and
after just a few short months had been nominated in the 2002
Mixtape Awards ~ an honor normally reserved for DJ’s with many
more years in the game.
2003
saw a leap in Vlad’s career with the release of “Notorious
BIG: Rap Phenomenon” which
consisted of rare and unheard Biggie verses brilliantly remixed by
DJ Vlad and Dirty Harry.
This legendary mixtape found it’s way to every corner of the
globe and was featured on MTV, The Source and XXL ~ who reviewed
it as if it was an actual album. Another legendary collaboration
saw Vlad, along with Dirty Harry and
Eminem’s DJ, Green Lantern put
out “Tupac: Rap Phenomenon II” which
garnered not only very favorable reviews in Vibe, XXL and The
Source but won them the award for Best Mixtape of the Year at the
2003 Annual Mixtape Awards.
With
a weekly radio show on XM Satellite’s “66 Raw” and
performance bookings all over the world as well as BET’s “Rap
City” 2003 was very good to Vlad “the Butcher” with no
indication that the momentum is slowing down. 2004 already sees
Vlad making arrangements to travel to Bahrain to entertain the US
troops stationed there, with many more bookings in the works. Vlad
is always looking for new ways to change up, and shake up the game
~ this Rock Phenomenon mixtape is just the first step of many more
to come.
